Born in Bogotá, D.C., he studied law at Sergio Arboleda University. Abelardo de la Espriella is a lawyer in Colombia and Italy, but he is not licensed to practice law in the United States. He previously served as an advisor to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, a far-right paramilitary organisation and drug-trafficking cartel regarded by the United States and European Union as a terrorist group. In November of 2025, de la Espriella proposed a controversial amnesty scheme for Colombian drug traffickers, which would protect them from extradition and allow them to keep a portion of their money from drug-trafficking operations.
